Oct 22 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International’s (PMI) shares
hit record highs on Tuesday after the cigarette maker raised its annual profit forecast and beat
third-quarter estimates thanks to higher prices and strong demand for its smoking alternatives.
PMI has invested billions of dollars in developing substitutes for cigarettes as health-conscious consumers switch
to smoking alternatives in some markets, including its IQOS heated
tobacco device and ZYN nicotine pouches, which are now a key focus for investors.
U.S. ZYN shipments in the quarter grew 41.4% over the prior-year period, rebounding
after supply constraints curtailed rapid growth. The Marlboro maker has been investing to expand production capacity for ZYN, in an effort to meet strong demand.
The company’s flagship heated tobacco device,
IQOS, also saw strong growth in regions such as
Japan, Europe and Indonesia, reassuring investors after volumes lagged expectations in the past.
“We delivered exceptionally strong performance, with record quarterly net revenues and earnings per share,” said Chief Executive
Officer Jacek Olczak, adding IQOS growth had
also accelerated.
PMI’s shares rose 9%, and remained almost 8% higher at 11.43 a.m.
(1543 GMT) in New York trading.
The company also enjoyed higher shipment volumes for cigarettes, with higher pricing
also driving a 5.2% increase in revenues from its combustible tobacco business.
PMI raised its forecast for 2024 adjusted earnings per share, excluding currency,
to between $6.85 and $6.91, compared with its prior range
of $6.67 to $6.79.
It reported revenue of $9.91 billion for the third quarter, versus analysts’
estimates of $9.69 billion, according to data compiled
by LSEG.
Its quarterly adjusted profit of $1.91 per share also beat estimates of $1.82 per share.
Last week, Philip Morris said it, along with peers
British American Tobacco and Japan Tobacco, would pay C$32.5
billion ($23.6 billion) to settle long-running health-related lawsuits in Canada.

The ‘cataclysmic’ Minoan eruption of Thera – one of the
largest in the history of the planet – took place a century earlier than first thought, scientists say.
The ancient eruption devastated the island of Terea, modern-day Santorini, and decimated fledgling
societies across the Mediterranean as the volcanic activity also triggered
an earthquake and a tsunami in the region.
Folklore claims the eruption kickstarted a wave so big it drowned an entire city, creating the mythical realm of Atlantis.
Researchers found an ancient olive branch buried under rocks on the island of Santorini and used radiocarbon analysis to reveal a more accurate date for the destructive natural disaster.
It is now believed the eruption took place between 1,627 and 1,600 BCE, more than a century earlier than the 1,500 BCE date previously suggested by archaeologists.

Charred olive wood is found throughout the archaeological record and provides a consistent way to date ancient
events, especially in the Mediterranean region.
The latest research took samples from an ancient piece of wood unearthed in fragments of volcanic rock
and compared it to two modern-era examples – one from a living tree and another from a specimen that had died a few
years earlier.
Dr Elizabetta Boaretto of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel took 20 samples from
the living tree and 11 from the dead branches, which had been cut
in 2013.
These samples were used to asses how olive trees grow, and apply the latest
findings to the ancient sample unearthed in Santorini.

Until now, it was believed the outermost ring of wood in the 3,500 year-old
olive tree sample was formed just before the branch was buried alive by the eruption.
According to the study: ‘The outermost rings of an olive branch
buried during the Santorini volcanic eruption is
regarded as crucial evidence for the date of this cataclysmic event.’
However, Dr Boaretto and her colleagues discovered that olive trees are different to most trees and do not produce visible growth rings
each year.
Using this found knowledge, scientists tested
other samples from the ancient olive tree branch to discovered parts of the branch almost a century older than previous estimates for
the volcanic eruption on Thera.

on Thursday said it would be filing a premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) in the United States for its IQOS ILUMA product in October.
The company at its investor day said that while the PMTA timeline remains “hard to predict”, it expects the launch of the ILUMA heated tobacco units towards the second half
of its three-year forecast period of 2024 to 2026.
IQOS heats up packets of ground tobacco but
does not burn them, a process the company says potentially results in fewer health risks
than traditional smoking
A PMTA is required to sell new tobacco products in the United States,
with manufacturers required to provide scientific data demonstrating a product
is appropriate for the protection of public health.

Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International on Thursday said it would be filing a premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) in the United

negative reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out other projects to help distract from the furor

Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for her turn as
Harleen Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49,
as the Joker – a role that won him the best actor Oscar in 2019 – in the wake of the standing ovation it received at the Venice Film Festival last month.
‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked
that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before
it premiered,’ a source exclusively told DailyMail.com.

Tarantino was set to create The Movie Critic which would have been his tenth and final film, but on April 17,

The famed director is now believed to be working up a new
project to mark his final cinematic release.

rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic book
movie.
Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters
earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds the higher score of C+.
Joker notably opened with $96.2 million on its theater release in 2019 and eventually took a little over $1 billion in the global box office.
The first movie – which was also directed by Phillips –
had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget more than doubled to around $200 million for Folie À Deux.
The sequel screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month, where
it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.
It had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the
number drastically dropped amid mixed reviews before release.
Audiences have since shared their opinions on the sequel, which
features multiple musical sequences.
‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this,’ wrote one on X. ‘What happened to the script?’
Another user added: ‘Stop making sequels as musicals if the original
wasn’t a musical.’
An insider told DailyMail.com: ‘Gaga is surprised by
the response to Joker 2 and is shocked that people don’t

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against the dollar, but is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns that
new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains on the struggling
Chinese economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to drive up U.S.
inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too much.
“We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,” Lynn Song, Greater China
chief economist at ING, said in a note.
However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.”
The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved
from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak
since 2018. The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building”
in the yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank
to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.
Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with manufacturing activities improving, but property
sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak. China’s “economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,” said John Browning, managing director of
BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic
Work Conference, as “Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.” Top policymakers will
gather at the conference to agree on major economic goals
for next year.
But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators globally for clues of Beijing’s
near-term policy intentions, likely will not be officially announced until an annual parliament meeting in March.
During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5% against
the dollar after the initial round of U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later when trade tensions escalated.
Growth worries and expectations of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year
treasury yields below 2% to record lows this
week, worsening the yield disadvantage against
the U.S., and exerting downward pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song expects the onshore yuan to move
within a band between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but could fall further to
