SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against the dollar, but
is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains on the
struggling Chinese economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are
expected to drive up U.S. inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too much.
“We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,”
Lynn Song, Greater China chief economist at ING, said
in a note.
However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-Ã -vis most other Asian currencies.” The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to
register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building” in the yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to
restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC
Capital Markets. Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic
recovery, with manufacturing activities improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities
remaining weak.
China’s “economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,” said John Browning, managing director of
BANDS Financial. He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic
Work Conference, as “Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.”
Top policymakers will gather at the conference to agree on major economic goals for next year.
But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched
indicators globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions, likely will
not be officially announced until an annual parliament meeting in March.
During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5% against the
dollar after the initial round of U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later when trade tensions escalated.
Growth worries and expectations of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s
10-year treasury yields below 2% to record lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against the U.S., and exerting downward pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song
expects the onshore yuan to move within a band between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but could fall further to 7.50 “if tariffs come in earlier or more aggressive than our forecasts.” LEVELS AT 03:47 GMT

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the
return of the Fair Isle knit. Once considered âugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind

in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family,
including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at least three
different Fair Isle designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair
Isle vest by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.
The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking
Apple, and sported a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer
to ring in the festive season at private members’ club in London last year.

for AW24, proving the multicoloured jumpers have become a timeless investment.

LONDON, March 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International is preparing to launch its flagship heated tobacco device IQOS in Austin, Texas, indicating it will be the first testing ground for its
U.S. entry, job adverts on LinkedIn show.
IQOS, the top selling heated tobacco device globally, sits at the core of the world’s biggest
tobacco company’s efforts to transform its image from a purveyor
of cigarettes to a driving force behind the switch to healthier options.
Investors are waiting to see if Philip Morris (PMI) can create
a market for heated tobacco in the United States, where vaping currently
dominates.
The country offers PMI a substantial base of new users and, potentially, a hefty new
income stream that could prove transformative as it tries to generate
an increasing proportion of revenue from products other
than cigarettes.
PMI spent the vast majority of $10.7 billion of expenditure on smoking alternatives between 2008 and 2022 on IQOS’ development.
The Marlboro maker had said it planned to launch the device in four
cities in two U.S. states starting with one city
in the second quarter, ahead of a broader roll-out likely in 2025.
However it had not released further details, including around which cities
or states it is targeting.
Job adverts posted on LinkedIn reveal that the company
is laying the groundwork for an IQOS launch in Austin,
Texas. The adverts, posted this month, include positions as field sales representatives, territory managers and retail sales advisors.
Whether or not IQOS takes off in the United States will be significant given the market’s size.
Euromonitor estimates total U.S. nicotine sales,
excluding nicotine replacement therapies, were worth some $143.6 billion in 2022.
While cigarettes accounted for the vast majority of that, Euromonitor forecasts their value will shrink by 30% by 2027.
The value of vapes, heated tobacco products and other alternatives will
rise by 36% over the same period, it says.
TESTING GROUND
Products like IQOS work by heating up sticks of ground up tobacco without
burning them in an attempt to avoid the harmful chemicals released via combustion.
Heated tobacco products have so far been largely absent from the U.S.
market aside from limited sales of IQOS managed
by PMI’s former parent, Altria, and another product offered on a
limited scale by British American Tobacco.
PMI paid Altria $2.7 billion for the rights to market IQOS in the United States in 2022.
BAT has subsequently cast doubt on the category’s potential in the country, where vaping and other alternatives are already well established.
Texas offers an interesting trial market given its broad demographics, ranging from super rural to highly urban, said Brett Cooper, managing partner and analyst at Consumer
Edge, an equity research firm. He added that diverse cities like Austin, Houston and
Dallas provide access to a wide range of consumer groups.
Tobacco taxes in the state are also relatively low, according to Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) data. The excise tax rate on a pack of cigarettes in Texas stood at
$1.41 in September 2023, the data shows – far higher than the
17 cents in Missouri but also well below the more than $5 per pack in New York.
Texas introduced new laws around e-cigarettes in January, restricting
devices that resemble food products like candy or fruit juice,
or that include a symbol or celebrity image targeted at minors or
depict cartoon-like fictional characters.
PMI bets IQOS can win a 10% share of U.S. tobacco and heated tobacco unit volume
by around 2030.
Ahead of IQOS’ launch, the company has also been building out its lobbying firepower across the United States.

Brian Vine wrote: ‘For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t scale
those heady heights, it is still a gripping film about mental illness; not quite comparable
with all-time greats such as Psycho (1960) and One Flew Over The
Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not too far off. ‘
The mixed reviews come after Gaga showed off her eclectic fashion sense on Monday as she channelled her character Harley Quinn at The Joker: Folie à Deux premiere in Los Angeles.
The entertainer stars in the forthcoming project alongside Joaquin Phoenix,

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit.
Once considered âugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport
holiday (specifically for aprÃĻs-ski), the Fair Isle
jumper has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.
The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.
It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later
Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained
a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton,
whose jumper collection includes at least three different
Fair Isle designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle vest by Molly Goddard over a light blue
button-down in a snap for Instagram. The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple, and sported
a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black
leather blazer to ring in the festive season at private members’ club in London last year.
A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for AW24, proving the multicoloured jumpers have become
a timeless investment. If, as in our case, that ÂĢ1,885 cashmere
turtleneck from Loro Piana is a little out of
your budget, there are countless options on the high
street. The cropped cardi from Hush certainly caught
our attention, as did the Fair Isle knit that was featured

Anyone who knows me has invariably been subject
to a spiel about how much I love Claudia
Winkleman. In part, it’s because she’s so silly, and in part, it’s because I’m a huge fan of everything she presents, from Strictly
to The Traitors.Â
But even more than any of that, it’s because I’m obsessed with
everything she wears. I’ve spent a fortune copying her
exact outfits, from her Sister Jane heart cutout dress to
a bedazzled Nadine Merabi blazer that I definitely don’t
go anywhere fancy enough to wear.
Since 2005, Claudia has worked with stylist
Sinead McKeefry to perfect her signature style. I’d describe
it as soft goth: lots of black, velvet and chunky knits, with a fair few sequins and prints (particularly
tartan) thrown in. I’m not alone in my reverence:
there are entire Instagram accounts dedicated to tracking down the presenter’s outfits.
But while they offer incredibly useful style inspo, two issues arise repeatedly:
Claudia’s clothes are usually hugely expensive
or sold out (or both).
So when the Strictly host stepped out in a typically preppy black velvet mini dress on Sunday, you’d be forgiven for assuming it was
by some top-end designer. Well, you’d be wrong.
The mini dress actually came courtesy of one of our favourite high street brands, Albaray – and you can pick it up
for less than ÂĢ100.
The dress is made from plush fabric with contrast satin detailing.
The velvet makes it a little festive, perfect for celebratory bashes over the next few months,
particularly when paired with white stilettos à la Claud.
But it could be just as easily dressed down with white trainers or ballet
flats and a trench for a chic office outfit, so you’ll certainly get your wear out of it. Â
Like all of Albaray’s products, it’s ethically made using responsible fabric and sent
via a carbon-neutral shipping method, so you can feel good
about the dress’s eco-credentials as well as how it looks.

The singer – a 13-time Grammy Award-winner – has delighted
fans with the first single from her forthcoming album LG7 which is due in February 2025.
Releasing a double feature of music videos she also unveiled the video for Die With A Smile (Live in Las Vegas).
The disturbing video for Disease sees her fighting with different versions of herself and chained up in a darkened room.Â
The video begins with the star seemingly the victim of
a car crash as she lies bloody on the bonnet of a car.

Convulsing she then awakens and opens her eyes to begin singing.
She then climbs up the car to look at the driver who is dressed as
a terrifying character in leather look.
She then jumps off the car before engaging in a savage fight with another version of herself.
The next scene then cuts to her chained up in the dark wearing white underwear and covered in scars as she stands on top of yet another version of herself.Â
She then wraps her legs around the other Lady Gaga to try and
strangle her as the tension intensifies.Â
The scary leather clad character from earlier is then seen vomiting black liquid next to another Lady Gaga who is lying on the crown.
She is then seen trying to escape the chaos as she gets trapped between two closing walls that eventually crush her to death.Â
It comes as Lady Gaga, 38, revealed she was ‘overwhelmed’ by her Little Monsters’
reaction to her latest tune Disease.
The pop superstar said she feels ‘insane joy’ about her fandom’s response to her electro-pop banger – and teased
that there is ‘a LOT more to come’.
