Philip Morris claims that IQOS is less toxic than cigarettes, but
multiple papers in an issue of the journal Tobacco Control
concluded that the company’s own data does not fully support those claims.
Research shows that although IQOS may have lower
levels of some toxicants than cigarettes, it can still expose users to higher levels of
other toxicants.
March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options
to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country following
its invasion of Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia in 2021,
said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette
products and canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.
It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks, heated tobacco units intended for use with its IQOS ILUMA
devices, as well as related investment of $150 million.
Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its planned investments and decided to scale down manufacturing operations in the country.
Rival Imperial Brands too has started talks to transfer its
Russian business to a local third party, joining BAT in exiting the sanction-hit country.

Joker: Folie À Deux (15, 138 mins)
Verdict: Bold, brilliant sequel
Rating:
A Different Man (15, 112 mins)
Verdict: A touching satire
Rating:
Venice, a city long associated with masks and masquerades,
was the perfect place to unveil Joker five years ago; and last
month, at the venerable film festival there,
it was followed by the sequel, Joker: Folie
À Deux.
The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix
once more in the title role, this time joined by Lady
Gaga as what I suppose we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful performance.
We’ve known since A Star Is Born in 2018 that she can act, but she really
is terrific in a bad-girl role. They’d have loved her at St Trinian’s.
This film is audaciously different in style from the
original, not as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the same.
Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether he will
be judged sane enough to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying his celebrity
status with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a
sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.
Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in sequel Joker: Folie À Deux
Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie a Deux – an American musical psychological thriller film directed by Todd Phillips
Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as the Joker, with Lady Gaga joining the cast as his love
interest, Harley Quinn
Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way, we suppose, to becoming Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn.
The pair hit it off at a music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten, but Lee makes it clear that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince of crime’,
not the gloomily introspective Arthur.

Which is more real: the psychopath wearing the mask or the vulnerable fellow behind it?
Either way, identity confusion is the theme of this film,
which keeps being billed as a musical.
It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning love for one another.
And there are a couple of swooning dance routines that
make them look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La
La Land (2016).
Moreover, it is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The Band Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to their prison wing.
The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity
to escape, yet Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver skilfully toy
with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate
which way the narrative is going to go, it confounds us by wheeling off in another direction.

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it

wants him to identify as his demonic alter ego.

His Three Daughters review: Savour this exquisite elegy to death
and sisterhood, writes BRIAN VINER
For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is still a
gripping film about mental illness; not quite comparable with all-time greats such as Psycho (1960) and One
Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not too far off.
– Joker’s Gotham, of course, is a lightly fictionalised version of New York City.
The real thing is the backdrop to A Different Man, another absorbing story, splendidly written and directed by
Aaron Schimberg, about an urban loner struggling with life.
In the case of the troubled, self-conscious Edward (Sebastian Stan), an aspiring actor, that’s apparently because he has a
disfiguring craniofacial condition. Instructional corporate videos seem to be about as far as he can get in the acting world.
There are obvious echoes of The Elephant Man (1980), and for that matter
of recent release The Substance, in which Demi Moore’s character, a former movie star ‘disfigured’ by a few wrinkles,
finds a way of transforming into her own younger self.
A still from the film A Different Man directed by Aaron Schimberg
Here, Edward is told by a doctor that ‘an alternative path has presented itself’.
In other words, medical science has found a way to reverse
his condition, turning him into a perfectly attractive middle-aged man.
But Schimberg’s point, made with great satirical swagger,
is that Edward, despite his radical change in appearance, is still the same
person underneath that he always was.
In his former condition he was befriended by his pretty, charismatic neighbour, Ingrid (Renate Reinsve),
a playwright. Now he is able to fall into bed with
her, and to star in a play she has written about their relationship, little though she knows of his real identity.
I was even reminded of Tootsie (1982) and Mrs Doubtfire (1993)
as Edward’s new persona fundamentally fails to alter who he actually is.
This is illuminated by the arrival of Oswald, an Englishman with the same condition Edward once had, but popular, witty, confident,
and gloriously played by Adam Pearson (who really does suffer from a disfiguring condition called neurofibromatosis).
Pearson is probably best-known for his debut film, Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant Under The Skin (2013).
Which is apt, because this picture, too, is about what’s under the
skin.
-A longer review of Joker: Folie À Deux ran a month ago.
Both films are in cinemas now.
Paul Weller’s film debut? That’s entertainment!
The 68th London Film Festival opens next week with the world premiere of Blitz, director Steve McQueen’s drama
set in London as the Luftwaffe’s bombs rain down night after night.
Saoirse Ronan, for my money one of the most talented actresses of her
generation, plays Rita, an East End mum whose son George (Elliott Heffernan)
goes missing. It sounds intriguing even without the casting of The Jam’s former front man Paul Weller
— in his feature film debut — as Rita’s father.
I’m also very much looking forward to another world premiere, Joy,
the story of the three brilliant British medical pioneers whose work on IVF led
to the world’s first ‘test-tube’ baby, Louise Brown, in 1978.
Saoirse Ronan, Elliott Heffernan and Paul Weller in the film ‘Blitz’
It is directed by Ben Taylor, best-known for his TV work on shows such as Sex Education and Catastrophe, and stars Bill Nighy,
James Norton and Thomasin McKenzie.
I have heard great things about Conclave, the adaptation of Robert Harris’s novel
starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci. A couple of new documentaries catch the
eye, too. One of them is made by actress Sadie Frost, whose
directing debut was a film about Mary Quant.
This time she turns to another fashion icon of the 1960s, with a
feature called Twiggy.
And Elton John: Never Too Late promises a ‘uniquely intimate’ look at the star’s life and career.
It’s been made by his long-time partner David Furnish, so… we’ll see.
VILNIUS, Feb 21 (Reuters) – Lithuania’s tobacco regulator believes Philip
Morris’s new electronic smoking device should be subject to the
same advertising restrictions as tobacco, potentially dealing a blow to a product the company has touted as the future of smoking.
Although the tobacco giant only risks a fine of up to 2,896 euros ($3,560)
if it is found guilty of breaching Lithuanian advertising law, the case could
have far-reaching consequences if it prompts regulators elsewhere to follow suit.
The Lithuanian watchdog is challenging Philip Morris
International Inc’s assertion that its iQOS device is an electronic product, and so should not be regulated like tobacco.
“After a six-month investigation, we could suspect that advertising of the iQOS device constitutes a possible indirect advertising of tobacco products, because this device can only be used to smoke tobacco products,” Jurgis Kazlauskas,
tobacco and alcohol control chief at the regulator, told Reuters.
The device, part of a $3 billion-plus investment by Philip
Morris in new-generation smoking platforms, is designed to heat tobacco
to a high enough temperature to create a vapour but not smoke.
The firm says it is a novel device, different from other e-cigarettes that
are often already subject to regulations.
Kazlauskas said Philip Morris had been notified
of its possible violation of Lithuanian advertising law, and that
the regulator was expected to issue its final ruling in a month.
Philip Morris representatives were not immediately available for comment.
The iQOS has been promoted extensively in Lithuania, and has stores on the
main streets of its largest towns.
The tobacco product used in the iQOS heating device,
also sold by Philip Morris but branded as Heets, is already a subject to advertising
restrictions similar to regular cigarettes.
Earlier this month, ten U.S. senators called on the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) to reject Philip Morris’s application to market the iQOS as less risky than cigarettes.
They cited a Reuters report in December that detailed shortcomings in the training and professionalism of some of the lead investigators
in the clinical trials submitted to the FDA by Philip Morris, the maker of Marlboro cigarettes.

MYKOLAIV, Ukraine, March 29 (Reuters) – A Russian rocket hit the regional administration building in the southern Ukrainian port city of Mykolaiv on Tuesday, trapping 11 people under
the rubble, the local governor Vitaliy Kim said.
An image showed a large hole in the side of the building.
On Tuesday, Reuters witnesses saw the destruction from
a distance and ambulances and fire engines heading to the scene.
The area was cordoned off by Ukrainian authorities.
Russian forces have attacked Ukraine’s southern ports including
Kherson, Odesa, Mykolaiv and Mariupol as they try to cut Ukraine off from the Black Sea and establish a land corridor
from Russia to Crimea, the peninsula Russia seized in 2014.
“They destroyed half of the building, got into my office,” Kim said.
“The entire supply of IQOS (electronic cigarettes) was lost.”
“Most (people) miraculously escaped – eight civilians are now under the rubble and we hope that (they) will be pulled out,” he said, adding three military personnel were also trapped.
Kim said there was an upside to the strike – it suggested Russia had given up trying to take over the city.
Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special military operation” to disarm and “denazify”
its neighbour. It denies targeting civilians. Ukraine and the West say Russian President Vladimir Putin launched
an unprovoked war. (Reporting by Natalie Thomas and Pavel Polityuk; Writing by Matthias Williams; Editing by Janet Lawrence)

Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was a strictly professional one
between a Prime Minister and a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss was
his ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.
However that characterization of the relationship was at odds with that made by Mr Joyce,
who said he was ‘good mates’ with Mr Albanese and had been ‘for years’.
In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister had
Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself from the Qantas chief.
When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr Albanese implied it was purely in a professional capacity, having been Transport Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister.
‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline … I had the
same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese said.
That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing
Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each
other’s company.
Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet at the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.
In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the
red carpet with one arm around the prime minister and the
other around Mr Albanese’s partner, Jodie Haydon.
Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special ‘Yes 23′ emblazoned airplanes for the Voice referendum.
Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce jovially walked the
red carpet with one arm around the prime minister and the other around his partner, Jodie Haydon for a special anniversary event last year
Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the PM
bursting into laughter.
Even when Scott Morrison was PM, Mr Joyce enjoyed an apparently close relationship with Mr Albanese as the
pair stood close together at the launch of the
Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight in March, 2018.
During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for
years’ with Mr Albanese.
Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership to the prestigious
and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused to confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the
Prime Minister.
‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’
Mr Joyce said.
However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to lock competitor Qatar Airways out of domestic
routes.
It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge, by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe
Aston that Ms Haydon is also a Chairman’s Lounge member.
Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce also appeared to greatly enjoying each other’s company at a Qantas event in August last year

Anthony Albanese fires up and launches a brutal personal attack on book author
Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy from Qantas and he would liaise
personally with the former airline boss for them.
Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce
while in his various parliamentary jobs to ask for special upgrades for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the
22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades
for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for holidays.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes and all
were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce.
Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted Mr Joyce to request
upgrades while holding a regulatory position in the transport sector.
‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would be
able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else because I’m not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.
It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership
of the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge
The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce
for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW city of Newcastle.
‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls –
we discussed the first flight from Australia to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.
‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of
the rules.’
Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.
‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.
Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s
lobbying to block UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime Minister’s office had
nothing to do with the decision.
Mr Albanese’s son Nathan, 24, has reportedly also
been granted access to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge (pictured,
Mr Albanese and son Nathan in May, 2022)
‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government that would not go through the Prime Minister’s office,’ Aston replied.
He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar had
seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine King speaking warmly about
the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks.
Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block
Qatar was due to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.
Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review
reported on Tuesday that he failed to do for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has questioned the alleged personal requests Mr Albanese made to Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs
Even when Scott Morrison was prime minister, Mr Joyce appeared to have a close relationship with Mr Albanese (the pair are pictured at an event in 2019)
Sky New host Sharri Markson on Monday night labeled Mr Joyce as ‘basically Albanese’s
personal travel agent.’
‘This is all a question of integrity. Most Australians struggle to afford even an economy airfare.
They’d never be able to afford the luxury of business class.
It’s out of our reach,’ she said.
‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens of thousands of dollars worth of free upgrades to
business class? The revelations puts the decision he made as transport minister and prime minister under a cloud.
‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also politically lethal.
Albanese took care to curate a self-image of a housing commission boy who made
it. But now the perception is cementing of a long-term pollie
enjoying the perks of public office.’
Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s apparent close relationship
with Mr Joyce is that the Labor leader in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to
break the power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff during Covid.
The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court in a
case brought by the union with Qantas facing possible hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts.
The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio
star Neil Mitchell.
‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.
‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having Alan Joyce
as a bestie? Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’
WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S CLUB?

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights
As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire,
each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump
lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of
about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back
a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state
constitution — and, while they’re at it, to
vote for Vice President Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several
Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”
She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”
Une pancarte barrée du slogan “L’indifférence aux élections est dangereuse”, à Tucson, en Arizona,
le 16 octobre 2024
Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse, has
worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited.
Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences for women having
problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.
“Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,” she told AFP.
– ‘Abortion is murder’ –
As Ireland carries her message to potential voters,
she noted, particularly to young people who may be less likely to vote, that it was Donald
Trump who appointed the three justices who
tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.
Donald Trump lors d’un meeting à Tempe, en Arizona, le 24 octobre 2024
“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.
But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro
Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.
“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions,
he conceded, “but that’s very small.”
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.
“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.
“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to
back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute
anyone suspected of having entered the country
illegally — powers normally reserved to the border police who work for
the federal government.
“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,”
Lopez said.
– Mixed impact –
The major political parties see the competing referendums as
offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at the very heart
of the two presidential campaigns.
Anti-abortion activists demonstrate outside a clinic in Phoenix, Arizona on April 18, 2024
But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with
the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and
both appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said
Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,” she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh,
a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent
toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered
in recent months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

The cost for one of London’s most pricey apartments will begin at £35million – with 600 megarich customers already securing a spot on the waiting list.
Pricing details of billionaire John Caudwell’s spectacular 1 Mayfair development have now been revealed and only those with the
deepest pockets can hope to afford one of the lavish pads.
The cheapest apartment on offer is expected to be an eye-watering £35million – around
70 times the average cost of a house in the capital.
Due to complete in Spring 2026 the scheme will easily surpass London’s previous record breaker, the £1.3billion One Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.
Caudwell told The Standard that there are already more than 600 prospective buyers on a waiting list of
billionaires and centi-millionaires who have expressed an interest in making a purchase at the scheme.
There will be just 24 ‘principal residences’ in the property including lateral apartments, penthouses and townhouses with up
to five bedrooms, and five more smaller ‘pieds-à-terre’ apartments.
The size of the homes has not yet been disclosed but the developers say
even the most modest property will start with a guide price exceeded by only
a handful of mansions in London’s richest neighbourhoods.
The average price of all 29 units – which cover 300,
000 sq ft – will be close to £70million.

The entry level price of £35million is 70 times the average London property
value of around £500,000, and 130 times the national average price of £268,000 revealed in today’s Nationwide house price survey for November.
The development’s basement is being dug down to 90ft below ground level to make room for a health spa with a 20 metre swimming pool as well as
a car park.
The designs were led by New York based architect Robert Stern and practice RAMSA, with contractors, Mace, the construction managers and PJ Carey responsible for the creation of the basement substructure and
superstructure.

Caudwell – who founded the mobile phones retailers

senior members of the construction team.
The ceremony was marked by the final steel rafter, one of 79 at roof level, being put into place on the top
of the nine-storey main apartment building.
No expense has been spared on the building’s interior and it will
feature a ceiling with hand-painted frescos based on Michelangelo’s Map of the Heavens in the Vatican, a reception room
with a double height ceiling and 18ft high French windows
overlooking the garden.
There will also be a Palace of Versailles Hall of Mirrors-style crystal callery, created from over 1,264 hand-set pieces of cut glass, a library and a garden gallery,
with seating areas opening directly onto the central courtyard garden.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed
on Friday against the dollar, but is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss
amid concerns that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese
economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to drive up U.S.
inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too much.
“We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,” Lynn Song, Greater
China chief economist at ING, said in a note.
However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.” The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per
dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of
7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since
2018. The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building”
in the yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by
China’s central bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.
Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic
recovery, with manufacturing activities improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining
weak. China’s “economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,” said John Browning, managing director of BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic Work Conference,
as “Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.” Top policymakers will gather at the conference to agree on major economic goals for next
year.
But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions,
likely will not be officially announced until an annual parliament meeting in March.
During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5% against the
dollar after the initial round of U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later when trade tensions escalated.
Growth worries and expectations of further monetary easing by
Beijing pushed China’s 10-year treasury yields below
2% to record lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against the U.S., and exerting downward pressure
on the yuan. ING’s Song expects the onshore yuan to move within a band
between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but could fall further to 7.50 “if tariffs come in earlier or more aggressive than our forecasts.” LEVELS AT 03:47 GMT

‘Tis the season of hosiery. Paired with a mini skirt and a sequin blazer (we’re looking at you, Selena Gomez), or styled with a little black
dress and a pair of killer heels (à la Alexa Chung at the Fashion Awards),
tights and stockings are a great way to add style – and perhaps an extra layer of
warmth – to your outfits during the autumn and winter months.
From matte to glossy, opaque to sheer, and black to skin-toned shades,
there’s a lot more to consider than just the denier number when it
comes to picking out a pair of classic tights. And then, of course, there is also patterned hosiery (think delicate designs like a back seam, polka dots or lace detailing)
to elevate your winter style.
‘Tis the season of hosiery
In 2024, tights should no longer be an obligation but a fashion choice.
Google searches for ‘tights’ are up by 115% since the temperatures first dropped, and
at high-street favourite M&S two pairs are sold every minute.
So what styles are we buying?
The top spot is claimed by the retailer’s 60 Denier Body Sensor Tights (a
handy three-pack that sells for just £8 and is available in a black,
navy and brown). The 40 Denier Body Sensor Tights (£8 for a three-pack) are second favourite, followed
by the 30 Denier Body Sensor Tights (£8 for a three-pack).
The fourth most popular pair is the 60 Denier Magicwear Opaque Tights (£14 for a two-pack), and the top five is rounded out by the 100 Denier Magicwear Opaque Tights
(£14 for a two-pack).
These are the number one selling tights at Marks & Spencer
M&S believes the decision between opaque and sheer tights
should be based on the formality of our outfit.
‘Opaque black tights will go with basically everything.
Often said to clash with black; blue or brown hues are also an option.’
‘Sheer tights are great for more formal occasions and warmer temperatures, as they provide a lighter and more breathable
option,’ the high street giant added. ‘You can achieve that elegant, barely-there look with a
little extra coverage.’
Similarly, intricate patterns, logos and glitter are best suited for evening looks, says
M&S. ‘For a daytime or office look, stick with polka dots or diamond patterned tights,
or if you’re looking for some added cosiness, try cable-knit tights for some subtle texture.’

Philip Morris claims that IQOS is less toxic than cigarettes, but
multiple papers in an issue of the journal Tobacco Control

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it
is still a gripping film about mental illness, writes Brian Viner
Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with
a smug interviewer played by Steve Coogan, it is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped
by the subject of multiple personality disorder.
Is the defendant accused of five murders Arthur, or is it Joker?
His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show it is the former; Lee just as urgently
wants him to identify as his demonic alter ego.

By Andrius Sytas
