We buy season passes to the zoo Memorial Day Weekend when they are on sale for $25 for the family. We go twice a week all summer for story time, and with the pass, it's less than the full price cost for ONE visit normally!
Rebecca Smith says
No impulse buying. I make a meal plan, buying as much as possible on sale. I don't buy new clothing unless it's extremely clearanced, I furnished my kids' entire wardrobes for the year for under $100 (I have 2 girls under 4), limiting AC use during the summer, lots of free local activities instead of buying memberships or tickets to places… the list goes on forever!

We have a big jar that we throw all of our change in. WE have paid for several trips by doing this.

I try to limit my impulse buying and frivolous spending by leaving my kids and husband at home when I shop! I'm always surprised at how much more I spend in the grocery store when they're with me!
My family has a special way that we save money for trips: My husband owns a repossession company (cars) and when people clean all of their personal belongings out of their vehicles, they often leave behind change. We mark and store the change for 90 days, and if the person does not claim their coins, my kids get to add them to a jar. That change then gets cashed in and split between my 4 kids to spend on souvenirs.

We have a large family- I have 8 kids. So typically we budget well in advance for it. Things that take a lot of time to save for, I buy visa gift cards, etc- and stash them, so that I have them saved up. I do the same thing with change. I've been known to even buy rolls of quarters and put them up in my room. We are less inclined to spend rolled change, so its easier to save it then it is when its literally just cash sitting in our change bucket.

My best way to save is by couponing & entering contests/doing twitter parties.

We save for summer fun my putting all of our spare change into cups and cashing it in once every month. We use that as our "fun" budget! We also take advantage of any free activities around town or group discounts offered. If we really want to save for something a little more pricey we re-do our grocery budget for the cheap for two weeks!

If you buy giftcards at Kroger, you get triple fuel points… every 100 points is 10 cents off gas at Shell. It can add up… so we buy gift cards at Kroger for stuff we're going to buy anyway. It helps save on summertime gas purchases.
