One of my best grocery planning tips is to just have a plan when you go out shopping! If you don't, you'll probably spend a lot more than you originally planned.

Plan meals around ads / sales and buy items that can be used in multiple meals. For example, lettuce wraps one evening and tacos another so you can buy bulk chicken and use it in both meals as well as use lettuce in both.

To save on groceries I like to print out coupons and even win coupons from giveaways. That on top of looking at sales.

I live in New Mexico so I love things like beans and green chili. But I won't say no to deviled eggs. Or "angeled eggs" as my household calls them.
