My mom was a restaurant chef, but nothing beats her home cooking. I'm talking traditional old world Italian recipes. I still can't make my meatballs taste like hers!

My favorite was my mom pot pie 🙂 She use to roll her own dough and I remember as a kid thinking it was amazing. She use to let me help move the rolling pin and help put flour on it. Now I make the meal with my kids and I hope one day they will make it with theirs. I think cooking is one of the best things a mom can do to spend time with her kids. Because their is certain foods I can't eat with out thinking of my mom 🙂

The dish I remember from my grandmother is her fried catfish. We live in Alabama and my grandfather loved to fish and when I would visit them at the lake my grandmother would cook whatever my grandfather caught. She made the best fried catfish and hush puppies. She been gone for 3 years now and I miss her but she was the sweetest lady I know.
ATLanta Saving Moms says
Don't talk about that fried Catfish Kristina (smiles). I love it!!!!! Now being from Louisiana, I can really relate to what you are saying. Of course, I love all Cajun food. Thanks for the great comments. 🙂

my mother isn't that much of a cook but my grandmother was WONDERFUL!!!! She made the BEST chicken and dumplings EVER! And her cornbread was soooo good! She amazed me the way she cooked…she didn't measure anything but always seemed to know exactly what was needed. Unfortunately her cooking skills didn't rub off on my mom or me 🙁
davenamy310@comcast.net
ATLanta Saving Moms says
This sounds delicious and I appreciate your comments. My grandmother didn't measure anything either Amy and neither did my mom. It was a hand method that my mom/grandmother used the most or a pinch of this or that. (smiles) 🙂
Mellanhead says
My mom wasn't a very varied cook. With six kids she made the same things to keep us all happy. My fav of hers growing up was her spaghetti and meat sauce

I think my favorite thing growing up, and I wish I would have thought to ask for the true recipe before she passed a few years ago, was this one peanut butter dessert she made. I want to say she took mashed potatoes, spread them evenly out on a cooking tray, let them cool in the fridge to harden some, then spread peanut butter even on them all across it. Rolled it, and sprinkled powder sugar on it and cut it into slices. It was the most delicious thing I have ever had growing up, and not found out how to do it since. I miss you mom. I remember I was in Desert Storm Desert Shield, and she tried to send me some in a care box, they didn't quite hold up to the handling and heat, but just the thought she knew that would have helped me at least get through that day, was the thought that counted.

Melissa says
My mother was never much of a baker but she had some dishes that she made that I can just picture now. One of them was a fried tomato dish where she would put flour on tomatoes cook them in a saucepan then she would take them out and then make a cream based sauce from the bits at the bottom of the pan, cream, garlic, and a few other ingrediants. She would pour that sauce over the tomatoes….mmmmm so good. High in calories but yummy beyond belief.
