My
mom would always tell me, “You must be independent and get a great
education to take care of yourself.” I find myself telling this to my
children also. She was definitely right and this saying of hers has
gotten me through some really tough times.

My grandma often said she could deal with anything once she knew what she was facing, that knowing the truth was always better than being unaware.

What an appropriate comment/question. My mom said the exact same thing (after my dad left) and it always stuck in my mind. And for once I listened and did exactly as she said. Now I work at a college and can fully support myself. I will give my daughter the exact same advice. A girl once told me, love everyone, trust no one. As for my grandma, to be honest – she was kinda mean and never said much at all! I don't remember her ever saying anything nice, just being honest!
