I start talking to the kids early in the summer about missing their friends from school. We also talk about any fears they may have like if the teacher is going to be nice, if the school work will be hard, etc. Doing this has alleviated any fears they have and reassured them that their fears are normal feelings.

I try and have my kids interact with as many friends/children as possible through out the summer. Stay in contact with as many as theirs friends as possible.
